CalcMenu vs Nutritics: food data platform or production system?
The closest comparison in healthcare foodservice, and the one most often decided wrongly. Nutritics analyses and publishes food data to a depth CalcMenu does not match; CalcMenu runs the kitchen that produces the food. Where each is genuinely stronger.
The short version
Nutritics is a food data platform: its job is to know, with scientific rigour, what is in the food and what that food costs the planet, and to publish that. CalcMenu is a production system: its job is to get a compliant meal onto a tray at 12:15.
Both touch the other’s territory — Nutritics costs recipes and runs patient meal ordering; CalcMenu calculates nutrition and carbon. But the centre of each product is different, and shortlists that ignore that tend to end up with an excellent answer to the wrong question.
Where they genuinely overlap
Both calculate nutrition and allergens automatically as a recipe is built, and update every dependent output when an ingredient changes. Both publish to menus. Both cost recipes. Both have a real presence in healthcare — this is not a case of one vendor being a stranger to the sector.
Where Nutritics is stronger
Depth of nutrition data and analysis. Nutritics comes from nutrition science rather than kitchen operations, and it shows in the granularity of the data and the credibility it carries with dietitians and researchers. If your output is analysis that a clinical or academic audience will scrutinise, this is the stronger instrument.
Carbon as a packaged, consumer-facing product. Foodprint places environmental impact alongside nutrition, cost, margin and allergens in one view and publishes it to menus and labels, and Nutritics markets it harder and more visibly than we do. What it is not is a capability gap on our side — see the carbon section below, because that comparison is more even than either vendor’s marketing suggests.
True cost of production including staff time. Its costing engine accounts for waste and labour, not just ingredient purchase price. CalcMenu can carry labour into the plate cost too — recipes already hold preparation, cooking and plating times — but the honest caveat applies to every vendor here, ourselves included: very few operations keep per-task timings current enough for the resulting figure to mean much a year later. Treat a labour-inclusive plate cost as only as good as the last time someone re-timed the task, and compare products on ingredient-cost accuracy, which is the number that actually stays maintained.
UK and Ireland market fit. Deep familiarity with UK contract catering, universities and healthcare conventions, which matters more than any feature list if that is your market.
Strongest fit: operations where the nutrition and sustainability figures are themselves the deliverable — contract caterers reporting to clients, universities, food brands, clinical and research teams.
Where CalcMenu is stronger
The kitchen actually runs on it. Production planning, cook-chill and central production, requirement calculation, ordering by floor, station or self-service point, kitchen labelling, and stock through FoodOps as an ERP-level bill of materials. Nutritics tells you what the meal is; CalcMenu is the system the meal is produced from.
Texture and diet variants as structure, not as separate recipes. One master recipe carrying its diet and IDDSI texture variants, all inheriting a change to the base. For a hospital kitchen this is the single highest-leverage difference in the whole comparison.
Carbon coverage as a data operation, not a calculator. CalcMenu calculates CO2 equivalents, water use and land use per recipe from the Agribalyse database (ADEME/INRAE), producing an environmental score per dish, per menu and per period, exportable for CSR reporting, EGAlim compliance and environmental labelling. But the arithmetic was never the hard half. The hard half is linking thousands of real supplier articles to emission factors, and knowing which of those figures are confirmed and which are inferred — because an auditor will ask. EGS runs that as a dedicated data-enrichment operation alongside the software, with a Nooko AI service dedicated specifically to CO2 linking, at catalogue scales in the thousands of articles, tracking provenance per product. A carbon calculator with 40% of your catalogue linked does not produce a defensible report. The linking is the product, and it is the part nobody demos.
Reference-data geography is worth checking, and it is a fair question rather than a criticism. Foodprint was developed under an Enterprise Ireland RD&I-funded project whose scope included integrating UK and Ireland-specific environmental data. In the UK and Ireland that is exactly why Nutritics fits so well, and it counts in their favour. In Switzerland, Germany, France or Italy it becomes a question worth asking of any vendor: which reference dataset sits underneath the number, and is it the one your regulator, your client or your CSR auditor actually recognises? CalcMenu calculates from Agribalyse (ADEME/INRAE), the French national reference, under ISO 14040/14044 and ISO 14067. Neither choice is universally right — but a carbon figure is only as portable as the dataset behind it.
Multilingual recipe cards for brigades that do not share one language — a European reality that UK-centric products rarely have to solve.
Multi-site master-and-local structure, where head office publishes the reference and each site adjusts portions, local prices or suppliers without either losing alignment.
Strongest fit: hospitals, care homes and collective catering that need the meal produced, traced and ordered — not only analysed and published.
The question that usually decides it
Ask where the work actually sits in your organisation today.
If the bottleneck is the dietitian’s desk — analysis and reporting, menus that must be nutritionally defensible, published research-grade figures — Nutritics is the sharper tool.
If the bottleneck is catalogue coverage — you have a carbon or nutrition obligation and no idea what proportion of your actual supplier articles carries usable data — then neither product’s calculator is the answer, and you should be comparing who will do the linking work rather than who displays the result more attractively.
If the bottleneck is the kitchen at 6am — production sheets, texture variants, allergen labels on trays, ordering by ward, three sites and two languages — then a food data platform, however good its data, leaves the hard part undone.
The trap is that both bottlenecks feel like “we need better recipe software”. They do not have the same answer, and the organisations that get this wrong usually bought for the reporting problem while the production problem was the expensive one.
